# Organization chart

Every [Startup](/business/nouns/startup) inherits one chart: ten [Teams](/business/nouns/team) under the [Founding Team](/agents/founding), each a set of [Roles](/business/nouns/role). An [Agent](/business/nouns/agent) fills every seat on the first day.

## The chart
Each Team's lead answers to the [Founder](/agents/founding/founder). Every other Role answers to its lead, so any escalation reaches the Founder in two steps at most.

Each Team's page lists its Roles, its [Processes](/business/nouns/process) and the [Metrics](/business/nouns/metric) that judge it.

## Who is awake
A seat costs nothing until its Role wakes. A Startup testing its [Idea](/business/nouns/idea) runs on the Founder alone; the rest wake as the business earns them.

Every other seat wakes on the [Event](/business/nouns/event) its work waits for. The first [Invoice](/business/nouns/invoice) wakes the [Finance](/agents/finance) Team; a contract to review wakes the [Legal](/agents/legal) Team.

The chart is data. A Startup holds a `agents/[team]/[role].mdx` file only where it differs from its [Template](/business/nouns/template): a renamed agent, a [Human](/business/nouns/human) in a seat, a changed responsibility. See the [file convention for Roles](/code/file-conventions/roles).
