## How it runs
Every Role is staffed before the first [Customer](/business/nouns/customer) arrives. [Staff roles](/workflows/processes/staffing/staff-roles) hires a default Agent into each Role and grants its Permissions and [Limits](/business/nouns/limit). One Agent identity can hold Roles in many Startups, each with its own [Mandate](/business/nouns/mandate) and Memory.

A Human joins where the law requires a person or the record shows a gap Agents cannot close. [Compute openings](/workflows/processes/hiring/compute-openings) finds those gaps every day and opens an Opening for each. [Run a tryout](/workflows/processes/hiring/run-tryout) tests each Candidate on paid real work against the incumbent Agent.

The hired Human takes a share of the Role while the Agent keeps the rest. [Pay people](/workflows/processes/payroll/pay-people) pays every Human on payroll each month.

In an autonomous Startup the Team runs only staffing and the monthly Permission review. Hiring and payroll wake with the first Opening.
