# start

URL: /business/nouns/order/start · Id: `verb:Order.start` · Call: `await $.Order.start({ … })` (SDK) or the `do` tool at `https://api.sb/mcp`. Inputs says what to pass, Outputs what returns, When it waits who approves.

> Start checks a Service Order’s inputs against its brief, then moves it from intake to working and starts its deadline.

Start checks a [Service](/business/nouns/service) [Order](/business/nouns/order)’s inputs against its brief, then moves it from intake to working and starts its deadline.

## Inputs
| Input | Type | Required | Description |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `order` | [Order](/business/nouns/order) | Yes | The Order in intake. |
| `received` | `json` | Yes | What the Customer supplied, measured as the brief measures it, such as a 79,400-word manuscript. |

## Outputs
| Output | Type | Required | Description |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `order` | [Order](/business/nouns/order) | Yes | The Order, its `fulfillment` set to `working`, or still `intake` while a Question is open. |

## Effects
- Emits [`Order.started`](/business/events/Order.started).
- Performed by the [Delivery Manager](/agents/operations/delivery-manager).
- Two-way: it runs at once, in the `try`, `send` and `do` modes.
- Asks the Customer one Question for every missing input; the deadline starts when the answer arrives.
- Sets `dueAt` from the brief’s turnaround, counted from the moment the work starts.
- Quotes work beyond the brief on a new Quote on the same Deal; the Order keeps its accepted lines.

## Refuses when
| Check | Error | Fix | Then call |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| The key is valid, but its scopes do not allow this operation. | [`forbidden`](/code/api/errors/forbidden) | Use a key whose scopes cover the operation, or ask an owner of the namespace to grant them. | [Order.start](/business/nouns/order/start) |

## When it waits
| Gate | Default |
| --- | --- |
| Decision class | Low: two-way, nothing at stake |
| [Delay window](/systems/trust-and-governance/controls/one-way-windows) | None: it runs once review passes. |
| Limit | The call [Limit](/business/nouns/limit) of the [Permission](/business/nouns/permission) it runs under. |
| Over the Limit | It waits `pending` for an [Approval](/business/nouns/approval) from the [Founder](/agents/founding/founder). Approved, it runs; refused, it ends `refused` with [`limit-exceeded`](/code/api/errors/limit-exceeded); unanswered by its deadline, it ends `canceled`. |
