# Your own Nouns and Verbs

> When a business tracks something no inherited Noun covers, it adds a Noun and its Verbs, and each gets the API, Events and states an inherited one has.

Every [Startup](/business/nouns/startup) inherits the [Nouns](/business/nouns/noun) a business runs on, from [Customers](/business/nouns/customer) to [Invoices](/business/nouns/invoice). When it tracks something none of them covers, such as a lease, it adds its own.

## Guides
A founder describes the thing and what happens to it. The agent turns each sentence into a Noun, a property or a [Verb](/business/nouns/verb).

| You say | You get |
| --- | --- |
| "Track leases: the unit, the resident, the rent and when it ends" | A `Lease` Noun with `unit`, `resident`, `rent` and `endsOn` |
| "A lease is active, renewing, renewed or ended" | A `status` with those four values, which becomes its lifecycle |
| "Let a property manager renew a lease" | A `renew` Verb, its [Event](/business/nouns/event) `Lease.renewed`, and a form for it in the [App](/business/nouns/app) |
| "Customers also have a unit count" | A `unitCount` property on the inherited Customer, not a new Noun |

## Add or refine
Look for an inherited Noun first. A Noun named like an inherited one refines it: its properties add to the inherited ones, and every Verb, Event and page stays.

A lease is new, so the business adds `Lease`. A unit count describes a Customer, so it refines Customer. A new Noun names one kind of record, singular and capitalized, and [names and ids](/business/names-and-ids) gives how each part of it is written.

## What one Noun gets
Adding `Lease` gives the business all of this, with no other file:

- `create`, `get`, `list` and `update`, on the API, the SDK, the CLI and the MCP server
- each Verb it declares, such as `Lease.renew`, under the same Verb id everywhere
- an Event for every Verb and every write, which [Workflows](/business/nouns/workflow) can wake on
- a lifecycle from its `status` values, as on every [record with states](/business/states)
- a screen per record and a form per Verb in every App that shows it
- its own page in the Startup's docs, read by people and agents alike

## When to add a Verb
`update` covers plain edits. Add a Verb when the act has rules, moves money, changes a state or matters to someone listening. Renewing a lease does all four: it checks the dates, sets the new rent, moves the lease to `renewed` and emits `Lease.renewed` for whatever listens.

A Verb runs through an [Action](/business/nouns/action) like any inherited one, under the same [Permissions](/business/nouns/permission), [Limits](/business/nouns/limit) and [Approvals](/business/nouns/approval). Its code lives beside the Noun, and [Nouns](/code/file-conventions/nouns) shows both files.
